Stegomastodon mirificus
Taxonomy
Mastodon (Tetralophodon) mirificus was named by Leidy (1858). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Niobrara River (coll. Hayden 1857), which is in a Barstovian/Clarendonian terrestrial horizon in the Loup Fork Formation of Nebraska.
It was recombined as Rhabdobunus mirificus by Hay (1914); it was recombined as Tetralophodon mirificus by Osborn (1918); it was recombined as Stegomastodon mirificus by Pohlig (1912), Matthew (1918), Osborn (1924), Hibbard (1951), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Repenning et al. (1995), Shoshani and Tassy (1996) and Zurita et al. (2004).
