Megabelodon was named by Barbour (1914) [named as a subgenus of Tetrabelodon by Barbour 1914; raised to genus level in 1934 by the same author]. It is not extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Gomphotherium by Tobien (1973), Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Lambert (1996) and Mothé et al. (2016).
It was assigned to Gomphotheriidae by Lambert and Shoshani (1998).
