Menodus bakeri was named by Stovall (1948). Its type locality is Big Red Horizon (Main Fossil Level), which is in a Duchesnean terrestrial horizon in the Chambers Tuff Formation of Texas.
It was recombined as Menops bakeri by Mader (1989) and Mader (1998).
