Symborodon trigonoceras was named by Cope (1873).
It was synonymized subjectively with Menodus coloradensis by Scott and Osborn (1887); it was recombined as Titanotherium trigonoceras by Osborn (1896) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Menodus trigonoceras by Osborn (1929); it was recombined as Menops trigonoceras by Mader (1989) and Mader (1998).
