Taxonomy

Stibarus obtusilobus was named by Cope (1873) [genotype]. It is a 3D body fossil.

Synonyms

Menotherium lemurinum was named by Cope (1874) [also said to be 1874]. It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Menotherium.

It was recombined as Leptochoerus lemurinus by Matthew (1899), Matthew (1901), Osborn (1902), Trouessart (1905) and Matthew (1909); it was recombined as Stibarus lemurinus by Galbreath (1953) and Macdonald (1955); it was considered a nomen dubium by Scott (1940); it was synonymized subjectively with Stibarus obtusilobus by Edwards (1976).

E. D. Cope 1873	Thin premolar with large anterior lobe and posterior heel. Median lobes obtuse; three last lobes connected by a low..edge: Enamel slightly rugose
P. Edwards 1976	Stibarus obtusilobus is the smallest of the leptochoerine species, less than two-thirds the size of S. quadricuspis, with a very weakly developed hypocone on the upper molars. The lingual apex of the triangular upper molars is sharper than the lingual apex of S. quadricuspis upper molars. The cingulum is developed only around the anterior end of the lower molars.
