Merychippus isonesus quintus

Taxonomy
Merychippus isonesus quintus was named by Osborn (1918) [named as Merychippus isonesus quintus by Osborn 1918; raised to species level]. Its type specimen is AMNH 14185, a partial skeleton (Upper and lower dentition and a large part of a skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Stylonus quintus by Kelly and Lander (1988); it was recombined as Merychippus quintus by Dorr and Wheeler (1964) and Kelly (1995).

Osborn 1918 (Matthew, 1913, Osborn, 1918) (1) The type a larger animal than any of the preceding premutations, approaching M. sever8U8 in the plications of tne enamel; (2) crochet bifid, i. e. with a large spur projecting into the pre- fossette and a large inferior pli caballin fold; (3) protocone separate from protoconule in little worn molars, uniting with protoconule in molars one-fourth worn; (4) protocone elongate anteroposteriorly in pLm3; (5) metaloph sending a single fold into prefossette, and from one to two folds into postfossette; (6) shafts of limbs robust; (7) metapodials robust; (8) shafts of lateral digits and lateral phalanges much heavier than in M. isone8WJ secundus and M. isonesus tertius.
