Bayhaium was named by Langenheim and McCutcheon (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-u P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 161]. Its type is Bayhaium merriamorum.

It was assigned to Syringoporinae by Langenheim and McCutcheon (1959); to Tabulata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Roemeriidae by Hill (1981) and Niko (2009).

R. L. Langenheim and V. A. McCutcheon 1959Bayhaium is characterized as a ceroid syringoporoid coral with well-defined mature and immature regions. The mature portion of the corallite is thick- walled, septate, and normal to the surface of the corallum. The immature portion of the corallite is thin-walled, nonseptate and inclined with respect to the axis and surface of the corallum.
