Originally a subspecies of Oreodon culbertsoni named by Cope (1884)
Taxonomy
Oreodon culbertsoni periculorum was named by Cope (1884). Its type specimen is AMNH 6397, a skull (Skull with I1-M3 and mandible with i1-m3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Horsetail Creek, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the White River Formation of Colorado.
It was recombined as Merycoidodon periculorum by Bump and Loomis (1930); it was recombined as Merycoidodon culbertsonii periculorum by Thorpe (1937); it was synonymized subjectively with Merycoidodon culbertsonii by Galbreath (1953); it was recombined as Genetochoerus periculorum by Schultz and Falkenbach (1968); it was synonymized subjectively with Merycoidodon (Merycoidodon) culbertsoni by Stevens and Stevens (1996); it was recombined as Prodesmatochoerus periculorum by Lander (1998).
