Taxonomy
Mesocyon brachyops was named by Merriam (1906) [type is from somewhere in the John Day "at Logan Butte"]. Its type specimen is UCMP 1692, a partial skeleton (almost complete cranium and partial pelvis), and it is a 3D body fossil.

Synonyms
  • Mesocyon baileyi was named by Stock (1933). Its type specimen is LACM 471, a skull (skull and mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Mesocyon coryphaeus by Lander (1983); it was synonymized subjectively with Mesocyon brachyops by Wang (1994).
