Taxonomy
Cynodesmus canavus was named by Simpson (1932). Its type specimen is FSGS V5260, a mandible (right lower jaw with p2 and p4-m2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Thomas Farm, which is in a Hemingfordian terrestrial sandstone/claystone in the Alachua Formation of Florida.
It was recombined as Tomarctus canavus by White (1942), White (1947), Olsen (1956), Olsen (1962) and Wang (1994); it was recombined as Metatomarctus canavus by Wang et al. (1999), Wang et al. (2008) and Wang and Tedford (2008).
