Michenia exilis

Taxonomy
Oxydactylus exilis was named by Matthew and Macdonald (1960). Its type specimen is AMNH 12997, a partial skeleton (partial skull and fore and hind limbs), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is AMNH Rosebud 5, which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in the Rosebud Formation of South Dakota.

It was recombined as Michenia exilis by Honey and Taylor (1978), Honey et al. (1998) and Honey (2007).

Synonyms
  • Michenia australis was named by Stevens (1977). Its type specimen is TMM 40871-1, a partial skeleton (a left mandible with P2-M3, a partial left Ml, the distal end of a humerus, the proximal end and other fragments of a left metacarpus with its unciform, and fra), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Castolon (TMM 40871), which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in the Delaho Formation of Texas.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Michenia exilis by Honey and Taylor (1978) and Honey et al. (1998).

Incisors and canine small, p1 compressed, two-rooted, with a long diastema behind it, p2-4 of subequal length,P4 longer than wide, P8 with anterior and posterior inner cingula not quite meeting medialy. Molars very brachyodont. Muzzle slender, antorbital fossa round, well defined. Lower jaw slender anteriorly, canine moderately compressed, close to incisors, long diastemata behind canine and P1. P3 with rudimentary inner crest, paraconids of premolars distinct.
M. S. Stevens 1977 (Michenia australis)Differs from Michenia agatensis by its smaller size, more prominent molar styles and ribs, and unfused metacarpal; from Miotylopus by its more prominent molar styles and ribs.
