Synaptomys kansasensis was named by Hibbard (1952). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kentuck, which is in an Irvingtonian terrestrial horizon in Kansas.
It was recombined as Mictomys kansasensis by von Koenigswald and Martin (1984), Wood and Barnosky (1994), Fejfar and Repenning (1998), Albright (1999) and Bell and Barnosky (2000).
