Synaptomys meltoni was named by Paulson (1961).

It was recombined as Mictomys meltoni by von Koenigswald and Martin (1984), Barnosky and Rasmussen (1988), Wood and Barnosky (1994), Fejfar and Repenning (1998) and Bell and Barnosky (2000).
