Arctocyonoidea was named by Trouessart (1885). Its type is Arctocyon.

It was corrected as Arctocyonoidae by Hay (1930).

It was assigned to Creodonta by Hay (1930) and Savage (1965); and to Condylarthra by Van Valen (1967) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1979).
