Taxonomy
Protolabis transmontanus was named by Cope (1879). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is "Loup Fork Fauna", Cottonwood Creek, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Mascall Formation of Oregon. It is the type species of Miolabis.
It was recombined as Miolabis transmontanus by Hay (1899), Hay (1902), Cope and Matthew (1915), Frick and Taylor (1971), Kelly (1992) and Honey et al. (1998).
