Merychippus westoni was named by Simpson (1930). Its type locality is Cummer Lumber Company Phosphate Mine, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Florida.
It was recombined as Merychippus (Merychippus) westoni by Stirton (1940); it was recombined as Nannippus westoni by Hulbert (1993) and MacFadden (1998).
