Taxonomy
Hipparion trampasense was named by Edwards (1982). Its type locality is Kendall-Mallory, which is in a Clarendonian terrestrial siliciclastic in California.

It was recombined as Neohipparion trampasense by MacFadden (1984), Hulbert (1987) and MacFadden (1998).

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
R. C. Hulbert 1987Medium sized hipparionine; UTRL and ltrl about 110 to 130 mm. Unworn M12 MSCH about 60 mm; more hypsodont than N. affine. Fossettes moderately complex; pli caballin strong, often double or bifurcated on premolars; metastyle present but much weaker than in N. eurystyle; pli caballinid persistently present on p2-p4, on m 1-m3 in early wear-stages. DPOF very shallow depression set well anterior to lacrimal bone.
