Taxonomy
Cynodesmus thomsoni was named by Matthew (1907). Its type locality is AMNH Rosebud 24, which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in the Rosebud Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Tomarctus thomsoni by White (1941), White (1942), Olsen (1956), Cook and Macdonald (1962), Macdonald (1963), Macdonald (1970) and Wang (1994); it was recombined as Desmocyon thomsoni by Wang et al. (1999), Wang et al. (2008) and Wang and Tedford (2008).
