Leptotomus costilloi was named by Wood (1962). Its type locality is Huerfano VIII, which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial horizon in the Huerfano Formation of Colorado.
It was recombined as Notoparamys costilloi by Korth (1984) and Wahlert (2000).
