Nyctitherium curtidens was named by Matthew (1909). Its type specimen is AMNH 12055, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Scenopagus priscus by Robinson (1968) and Gazin (1976); it was recombined as Scenopagus curtidens by Krishtalka (1976), Krishtalka (1976), Gunnell et al. (1992) and Zonneveld et al. (2000).
