Ophiomys fricki was named by Hibbard (1972) [in Skinner and Hibbard]. Its type specimen is UMMP V57288, a tooth (m1 inf. sin.), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Mimomys fricki by Repenning (1987) and Korth (1994).
