Taxonomy
Geomys hispidus was named by Le Conte (1852). It is extant.

It was recombined as Heterogeomys hispidus by Merriam (1895) and Nelson and Goodman (1929); it was recombined as Orthogeomys hispidus by Russell (1968) and Hall (1981).
