Taxonomy
Dictyocephalus was named by Ehrenberg (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr R Sepkoski's reference number: ZR80]. It is extant. Its type is Dictyocephalus elegans.

It was assigned to Metoposauridae by Carroll (1988); to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Theoperidae by Liu and Aitchison (2002).
