Plionictis sanguinarius was named by Loomis (1932). Its type locality is Sixty Six Mountain (Upper), which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in the Harrison Formation of Wyoming.
It was recombined as Palaeogale sanguinarius by Baskin (1998).
