Taxonomy
Mustela sectoria was named by Gervais (1848). Its type specimen is NHMUK M27816, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Palaeogale sectoria by Schlosser (1888), de Bonis (1981), Morlo (1996), Baskin and Tedford (1996) and de Bonis et al. (2019).

Synonyms
  • Bunaelurus ulysses was named by Matthew and Granger (1924). Its type specimen is AMNH 19004, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Loh, which is in an Oligocene terrestrial horizon in the Hsanda Gol Formation of Mongolia.

    It was recombined as Palaeogale ulysses by Simpson (1946); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeogale sectoria by de Bonis (1981).
  • Bunaelurus parvulus was named by Matthew and Granger (1924). Its type specimen is AMNH 19013, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Loh, which is in an Oligocene terrestrial horizon in the Hsanda Gol Formation of Mongolia.

    It was recombined as Palaeogale parvulus by Simpson (1946); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeogale sectoria by de Bonis (1981).
  • Bunaelurus infelix was named by Matthew (1903). Its type specimen is AMNH 9620, a mandible (part of a lower jaw with p4-m1 and the stump of m2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pipestone Springs, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial claystone in the Renova Formation of Montana.

    It was recombined as Palaeogale infelix by Simpson (1946); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeogale sectoria by de Bonis (1981) and Baskin and Tedford (1996).
