Palaeosyops manteoceras
Taxonomy
Palaeosyops manteoceras was named by Osborn in Matthew (1899) [named accidentally based on "Palaeosyops manteoceras" material of Matthew 1899; argued incorrectly by Osborn 1929 to be the genotype, which is M. vallidens]. Its type specimen is AMNH 1569, a skull (a skull with no complete teeth), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Manteoceras.
It was recombined as Manteoceras manteoceras by Hay (1902) and Osborn (1908); it was considered a nomen nudum by Osborn (1929) and Mader (1989); it was synonymized subjectively with Telmatherium validus by Mader (2008) and Mihlbachler (2008).
