Taxonomy

Palaeosyops paludosus was named by Leidy (1870) [genotype]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Church Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Limnohyus paludosus by Cope (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeosyops fontinalis by Stucky (1984).

Synonyms

Canis montanus was named by Marsh (1871).

It was replaced with Canis marshii by Hay (1899) and Hay (1902).
Palaeosyops minor was named by Earle (1891).

It was synonymized subjectively with Palaeosyops paludosus by Osborn (1929).
Canis marshii was named by Hay (1899) [replacement name for "Canis montanus" of Marsh 1871, a primary homonym and a brontothere in any case].

It was recombined as Telmatherium marshii by Matthew (1909); it was considered a nomen dubium by Osborn (1929); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeosyops paludosus by Mader (1998) and Gunnell and Yarborough (2000).
Limnohyops matthewi was named by Osborn (1908).

It was synonymized subjectively with Palaeosyops paludosus by Mader (1998) and Gunnell and Yarborough (2000).
Limnohyops monoconus was named by Osborn (1908). Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Palaeosyops laevidens by Cope (1884), Earle (1891), Earle (1892), Roger (1896), Trouessart (1898), Hay (1902) and Gunnell and Yarborough (2000); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeosyops laticeps by Matthew (1899); it was recombined as Limnohyops laevidens by Osborn (1929); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeosyops paludosus by Leidy (1873), Mader (1998) and Mader (2010).
