Taxonomy
Cimexomys magister was named by Fox (1971). Its type locality is Verdigris Coulee (UA-MR-6), which is in a Santonian terrestrial sandstone/shale in the Milk River Formation of Canada.

It was recombined as Paracimexomys magister by Archibald (1982), Lillegraven and McKenna (1986), Montellano et al. (2000), Eaton and Cifelli (2001) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).
