Gymnoptychus trilophus was named by Cope (1873).

It was recombined as Adjidaumo trilophus by Hay (1899) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Paradjidaumo trilophus by Wood (1937), Galbreath (1953), Wood (1974), Wood (1980), Korth (1980) and Korth (2014).
