Taxonomy

Leptotragulus was named by Scott and Osborn (1887). Its type is Leptotragulus proavus. It is the type genus of Leptotragulinae.

It was assigned to Hypertragulidae by Peterson (1919); to Leptotragulinae by Hay (1902), Matthew (1908) and Gazin (1955); and to Protoceratidae by Scott and Osborn (1887), Carroll (1988), Prothero (1998) and Prothero and Ludtke (2007).

Synonyms

Parameryx was named by Marsh (1894). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Leptotragulus by Peterson (1919) and Gazin (1955).

It was assigned to Leptotragulinae by Hay (1902).
