Dictyophimus was named by Ehrenberg (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Dictyophimus crisiae. It was considered unknown by Abelmann (1992).

It was assigned to Theoperidae by Abelmann (1992); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
