Teleoceras was named by Hatcher (1894).
It was assigned to Teleoceratinae by Hay (1902); to Teleoceratini by Prothero and Schoch (1989), Prothero (1998), Prothero (2005), Gustafson (2012), Short et al. (2019) and May (2019); and to Rhinocerotidae by Hatcher (1894), Scott (1913), Thurmond and Jones (1981), Carroll (1988), Hulbert and Whitmore (2006) and Albright et al. (2019).
