Parictis dakotensis was named by Clark (1936) [in Scott and Jepsen]. Its type locality is Peanut Peak, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the Chadron Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Subparictis dakotensis by Wang and Tedford (1992), Baskin and Tedford (1996) and Korth et al. (2022).
