Taxonomy
Parictis major was named by Clark and Guensburg (1972). Its type locality is Peanut Peak, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the Chadron Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Amphicynodon major by Baskin and Tedford (1996).
