Taxonomy
Isectolophus was named by Scott and Osborn (1887). Its type is Isectolophus annectens. It is the type genus of Isectolophinae.
It was assigned to Tapiridae by Hay (1902) and Scott (1913); to Isectolophinae by Peterson (1919); to Ancylopoda by Hooker and Dashzeveg (2004); to Isectolophidae by Scott and Osborn (1887), Radinsky (1963), Carroll (1988), Prothero and Schoch (1989), Colbert and Schoch (1998), Holbrook (1999) and Holbrook et al. (2004); and to Tapiromorpha by Colbert (2005).
