Taxonomy

Isectolophus was named by Scott and Osborn (1887). Its type is Isectolophus annectens. It is the type genus of Isectolophinae.

It was assigned to Tapiridae by Hay (1902) and Scott (1913); to Isectolophinae by Peterson (1919); to Ancylopoda by Hooker and Dashzeveg (2004); to Isectolophidae by Scott and Osborn (1887), Radinsky (1963), Carroll (1988), Prothero and Schoch (1989), Colbert and Schoch (1998), Holbrook (1999) and Holbrook et al. (2004); and to Tapiromorpha by Colbert (2005).

Synonyms

Parisectolophus was named by Peterson (1919). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Isectolophus by Radinsky (1963), Schoch (1989), Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Colbert and Schoch (1998).

It was assigned to Isectolophinae by Peterson (1919).

Diagnosis

Reference	Diagnosis
L. B. Radinsky 1963	Medium-sized to large isectolophids. N o diastemata. P relatively small. P 313 with minute lingual crista. P submolariform, with one or two lingual cusps. M " relatively longer and narrower than in Homogalax, with protoconules and metaconules never disr tinct. Pa relatively low; P ^ with relatively low trigonid and high posterior medial ridge (= metalophid). No metastylid on m1-3.
