Taxonomy
Ammodon potens was named by Marsh (1893). Its type specimen is YPM 12042, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Pelonax potens by Peterson (1909), Troxell (1920), Troxell (1920) and Scott (1940); it was recombined as Archaeotherium potens by Galbreath (1953).
