Herpetotherium fuzax was named by Cope (1873) [genotype; originally spelt "fuzax"]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was corrected as Herpetotherium fugax by Cope (1873); it was recombined as Peratherium fugax by Cope (1884), Galbreath (1953), White (1954), Russell (1984) and Ostrander (1987); it was recombined as Didelphis fugax by Hay (1901).
