Herpetotherium fuzax was named by Cope (1873) [genotype; originally spelt "fuzax"]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Peratherium fugax by Cope (1884), Hay (1930), Galbreath (1953), White (1954), Russell (1984) and Ostrander (1987); it was recombined as Didelphis fugax by Hay (1901) and Hay (1902); it was corrected as Herpetotherium fugax by Cope (1873), Korth (2018), Lofgren et al. (2020) and Korth et al. (2022).

Synonyms

Didelphys pygmaea was named by Scott (1894) [non Didelphis pygmaea Shaw 1794].

It was recombined as Didelphis pygmaea by Hay (1901) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Peratherium pygmaeum by Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Peratherium huntii by Scott (1941); it was synonymized subjectively with Peratherium fugax by Krishtalka and Stucky (1983) and Ostrander (1987); it was synonymized subjectively with Herpetotherium fuzax by Hough (1961) and Korth (1994).
Herpetotherium scalare was named by Cope (1873).

It was recombined as Peratherium scalare by Cope (1884) and Hay (1930); it was recombined as Didelphis scalare by Hay (1901); it was recombined as Didelphis scalaris by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Peratherium fugax by Scott (1941); it was synonymized subjectively with Herpetotherium fuzax by Korth (1994).
Herpetotherium tricuspis was named by Cope (1873).

It was recombined as Peratherium tricuspis by Cope (1884) and Hay (1930); it was recombined as Didelphis tricuspis by Hay (1901) and Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Peratherium fugax by Scott (1941); it was synonymized subjectively with Herpetotherium fuzax by Korth (1994).

E. D. Cope 1873	Enamel smooth, no cinguluin on either side. Molars truncate behind. Outer anterior lobe acute, considerably the higher.
