Herpetotherium marginale was named by Cope (1873).

It was recombined as Embassis marginalis by Cope (1875); it was recombined as Didelphys marginalis by Cope (1879); it was recombined as Peratherium marginale by Cope (1884); it was recombined as Geolabis marginalis by McKenna et al. (1962); it was recombined as Centetodon marginalis by Lillegraven et al. (1981), Korth (1994) and Asher et al. (2005).
