Prodipodomys mascallensis was named by Downs (1956).

It was recombined as Peridiomys mascallensis by Reeder (1956); it was recombined as Mojavemys mascallensis by Lindsay (1972) and Barnosky (1986); it was recombined as Cupidinimus mascallensis by Korth (1979) and Whistler (1984).
