Taxonomy
Peridiomys rusticus was named by Matthew (1924) [genotype]. Its type locality is Far Surface Quarry, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Olcott Formation of Nebraska. It is the type species of Peridiomys.
It was recombined as Diprionomys rusticus by Hall (1930).
