Taxonomy
Periptychus coarctatus was named by Cope (1883). Its type specimen is AMNH 3775, a mandible (lower dentition), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Plagioptychus coarctatus by Matthew (1936); it was recombined as Carsioptychus coarctatus by Simpson (1936), Archibald et al. (1987) and Cifelli et al. (1999).
