Perognathoides eurekensis was named by Lindsay (1972). Its type locality is Eureka, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Barstow Formation of California.
It was recombined as Cupidinimus eurekensis by Korth (1979), Whistler (1984) and Sutton and Korth (1995).
