Perognathus dunklei was named by Hibbard (1939). Its type specimen is Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard, No. 6203, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Edson, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Kansas.
