Taxonomy
Sciuropterus jamesi was named by Lindsay (1972). Its type locality is Carnivore Canyon 5, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Barstow Formation of California.
It was recombined as Petauristodon jamesi by Engesser (1979) and Pratt and Morgan (1989).
