Pitymys aratai was named by Martin (1974). Its type locality is Coleman IIA, which is in an Irvingtonian sinkhole claystone/sandstone in Florida.
It was recombined as Microtus aratai by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was synonymized subjectively with Pitymys mcnowni by Webb and Wilkins (1984).
