Pitymys parvulus was named by Howell (1916).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pitymys pinetorum by Sherman (1952); it was recombined as Microtus parvulus by Hall and Cockrum (1953); it was synonymized subjectively with Microtus pinetorum by Hall (1981) and Martin (1987).
