Taxonomy
Psammomys pinetorum was named by Le Conte (1830). It is extant.

It was recombined as Pitymys pinetorum by van der Meulen (1978), Repenning (1983), Zakrzewski (1985), Repenning and Grady (1988) and Pfaff (1990); it was recombined as Microtus pinetorum by Kurten and Anderson (1980), Hulbert and Pratt (1998) and Bell and Bever (2006).
