Sorex dixonensis was named by Hibbard (1956). Its type locality is Dixon, which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in Kansas.

It was recombined as Planisorex dixonensis by Skinner and Hibbard (1972) and Kurten and Anderson (1980).
