Platygeomys tylorhinus was named by Merriam (1895). It is extant.

It was recombined as Pappogeomys tylorhinus by Russell (1968) and Hall (1981); it was recombined as Cratogeomys tylorhinus by Hooper (1947), DeWalt et al. (1993) and Monterrubio et al. (2000).
