Synaptomys rinkeri was named by Hibbard (1956). Its type locality is Dixon, which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in Kansas.
It was recombined as Plioctomys rinkeri by Repenning and Grady (1988), Repenning et al. (1995) and Fejfar and Repenning (1998).
